![]() ![]() Tonight, the "SNL" time slot becomes a living archive of Smigel's work for the series, and to get the bad news out of the way first, an hour and a half of it in one caliginous lump gets a little wearing, even though Smigel and colleagues at "SNL" created a framework of new animation and live action to break up monotony and keep the thing moving along. And yet many viewers probably have no idea what Smigel looks like, since most of his contributions have been short satirical cartoons preceded by an animated version of Lorne Michaels (the executive producer) ordering Smigel to "come back with my show." Robert Smigel has been savagely satirizing since 1996 on NBC's "Saturday Night Live," which by now has reached the status of national utility, something nearly as indispensable as, oh, gas and electricity. The point is that just by expending the energy to lampoon and ridicule the times, and to do so with some degree of entertaining wit, bespeaks a belief that the system actually is improvable - that hopelessness, however logical, is a lazy pose and truly uncool.
